Tips for patients

After surgery in the oral cavity

  1. 1. After the surgery you just had and given the local anesthesia, you may not receive food until its complete resolution. But you can drink liquids.
  2. 2. The first week, and until the cutting of sutures, avoid any sports or physical stress, do not bend, do not lift weights and do not stay long enough with your head down.
  3. 3. Do not undergo a diet, as your immune system needs to be strong during the healing process. Your diet should consist of fish, pasta, vegetables and soft foods in general. Attention, however, to fruit acids that may irritate the wound. In addition, reduce caffeine (coca cola, coffee, black tea) and dairy products.
  4. 4. At least the first week after surgery, no smoking and alcohol consumption.
  5. 5. Remember to have frequent mouth wash, two to three times daily with chlorhexidine solution, but do not exaggerate, as excessive mouth wash may influence negatively the wound.
  6. 6. Keep brushing your teeth and after the end of the medical treatment, you will receive more instructions about your oral hygiene.
  7. 7. Don’t worry if you notice swelling on the treated area or on your cheek. The swelling increases in size the first three days after surgery and then gradually subsides. What you have to do the first three days, is to place the ice pack that we gave you, 2 to 3 minutes a day on the outer surface of the skin.
  8. 8. Also any discomfort in the area of the surgery is normal; you'll be relieved by taking the painkillers that we recommended you. You must not take aspirin, because it causes bleeding, unless you must take it for other serious disease. In any case, you must discuss your medical needs with both the surgeon and the doctor that are treating you.
  9. 9. In case of bleeding, stay calm and try to control the bleeding, initially with some gauze. The gauze should remain bitten in the area of the surgery for about 30 minutes. If there is no improvement within 1 to 2 hours, contact us and we'll give you further instructions. Keep in mind that you don’t bleed when your saliva is pink but when you see bright, thick red blood.
  10. 10. You may also have fever. If, however, you have a very intense and long-lasting fever, call us immediately.
  11. 11. If you are regularly taking medications for general ailments, you should inform us, as well as your doctor, before surgery.
  12. 12. Do not miss your appointment for cutting sutures, as this is a very important part of the healing procedure.

After tooth extraction

  1. 1. Keep biting the gauze, two hours after the tooth extraction.
  2. 2. Do not suck the wound and do not swallow the blood.
  3. 3. Avoid eating very hot or very cold foods and beverages.
  4. 4. Next day, start mouth wash with salt water every 2 hours (one half teaspoon salt, in a half glass of water)
  5. 5. Do not brush your teeth near the wounded area.
  6. 6. If you cannot stop the bleeding, please contact us immediately.
